What to watch with hsCRP and gut health?

hsCRP (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein) is a systemic inflammation marker, not specific to gut health. Elevated hsCRP can indicate impaired gut barrier ('leaky gut') or dysbiosis, as bacterial components like lipopolysaccharides (LPS) trigger immune responses. Studies show moderate associations between lower microbial diversity and higher hsCRP levels. However, hsCRP is also influenced by smoking, obesity, infections, or rheumatic diseases. A normal hsCRP does not rule out subclinical gut inflammation. If hsCRP is elevated, complementary stool tests (calprotectin, zonulin, microbiome analysis) are advisable. Evidence for direct causal links between specific gut bacteria and hsCRP is still limited. Consumer tests provide insights, not diagnoses. Dietary changes with more fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and polyphenols can lower hsCRP and strengthen the gut barrier.
