What role does COMT play in Allergie?

COMT (Catechol-O-Methyltransferase) is an enzyme responsible for breaking down catecholamines like dopamine, adrenaline, and noradrenaline. These neurotransmitters also modulate immune cells. Some studies suggest a possible link between COMT variants and allergic conditions, potentially through altered stress responses or histamine regulation. However, the evidence is weak and inconsistent. Most data come from small observational or mechanistic studies. A direct causal role of COMT in allergies is not established. DNA tests analyzing COMT variants have no proven clinical utility for allergy prediction or management. Environmental factors, diet, and other genes play a far greater role. Be cautious with direct-to-consumer tests: COMT is not a validated allergy biomarker.
