What to watch with FTO and allergy?

FTO (Fat Mass and Obesity-associated) is primarily known for its strong association with obesity and BMI. Some GWAS and cohort studies have also reported links to allergic conditions like asthma or atopic dermatitis, but the evidence is inconsistent. The observed associations may be largely mediated by BMI – higher BMI is a risk factor for asthma and allergies. Direct causal mechanisms between FTO variants and immune function are not well established. In commercial DNA tests, FTO is typically offered in the context of weight management, not allergies. Interpreting FTO results for allergy risk is therefore speculative. Clinically relevant allergy testing (specific IgE, skin prick test) should still be performed by an allergist. Beware of oversimplification: a single gene like FTO has only a small effect on complex diseases. The evidence for a direct FTO–allergy connection is weak and mixed.
