Lay opinion often claims that the FTO gene is a 'fat gene' that predestines obesity. Evidence tells a more nuanced story. FTO variants (e.g., rs9939609) are among the most replicated GWAS hits for BMI, but each risk allele increases BMI by only ~0.3 kg/m² on average. The effect is small and polygenic – hundreds of other loci contribute. Moreover, the association is partly mediated by appetite and eating behavior, not a direct metabolic defect. Lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, sleep) have a far larger impact. Direct-to-consumer FTO tests can inform about genetic predisposition, but they are not diagnostic and should not replace a balanced view of weight management. Many people with the risk allele are lean, and many without it are overweight. The clinical utility for individuals is limited. MyBody-X tests in this area are for educational purposes.
