How are Transferrin and fertility related?

Transferrin is an iron-transport protein; its saturation (TSAT) along with ferritin helps assess iron status. Both iron deficiency and overload can impair fertility: deficiency disrupts ovulation and sperm quality, while overload (e.g., in hemochromatosis) can cause hypogonadism and ovarian failure. However, direct evidence linking transferrin levels to fertility outcomes is mostly mechanistic and associative; no robust human trials exist. Transferrin alone is insufficient to diagnose fertility issues; a full iron panel and hormonal workup are required. Caveat: transferrin is an acute-phase reactant and may be elevated by inflammation, masking true iron status.
