Questions people ask about Ferritin Basis

Ferritin is a protein that stores and releases iron. Blood ferritin levels reflect your body's iron reserves. Low ferritin indicates iron deficiency; high ferritin may suggest iron overload (hemochromatosis) or inflammation. Important: Ferritin is an acute-phase reactant – it can rise during infections or chronic inflammation even when iron stores are normal. Consumer DNA tests for ferritin are rare and usually not predictive, as genetics (e.g., HFE variants) explain only a small part of ferritin regulation. A blood test ordered by a doctor is the gold standard. Supplementing without proper diagnosis can be harmful (iron overload). Evidence: well-established for ferritin as a biomarker, but genetic tests have low predictive value. Safety note: Never take iron supplements without medical supervision.
