CRP (C-reactive protein) is a blood biomarker of inflammation, produced by the liver in response to cytokines like IL-6. A DNA test cannot measure your current CRP level; it can only report genetic variants (e.g., in the CRP gene) that are associated with small differences in baseline CRP. However, the heritability of CRP is modest (~30–40%), and lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, smoking, infections) have a much larger impact. Therefore, a DNA test cannot predict whether you have chronic inflammation or will develop it. It may provide a weak indication of genetic predisposition, but clinical decisions require a blood test. The evidence for CRP-associated SNPs is based on GWAS (genome-wide association studies) and is considered moderate. Do not use a DNA test as a substitute for medical evaluation of inflammation.
