The current estimate of human protein-coding genes is about 20,000–25,000 (GENCODE/Ensembl). Earlier estimates were higher, but improved sequencing and annotation have revised the number downward. Additionally, there are thousands of non-coding RNA genes. A commercial DNA test like MyBody-X analyzes only a small set of SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) – typically a few hundred to a thousand markers – not the entire genome. Such tests can provide hints about genetic predispositions (e.g., lactose intolerance, athletic traits), but they do not replace medical diagnostics. The effect sizes of individual SNPs are often small, and results are population-dependent. Whole-genome sequencing is not yet standard for consumer use. Therefore: a DNA test can offer interesting insights, but it does not 'count' all genes and is not a comprehensive health assessment.
