Myths vs facts: FTO and fatigue

The myth that the FTO gene directly causes fatigue is not supported by evidence. FTO (fat mass and obesity-associated gene) is robustly linked in GWAS to body weight, appetite, and obesity risk, but not to fatigue as a primary trait. An indirect link is plausible: obesity-related sleep apnea or metabolic strain could contribute to tiredness. However, the evidence for a direct FTO–fatigue connection is weak („gwas“/„unclear“). A DNA test cannot diagnose or explain fatigue. Persistent tiredness requires clinical evaluation (thyroid, iron, sleep disorders). Consumer tests like MyBody-X provide screening-level insights, not medical conclusions.
