When is Helicobacter Labor actually useful?

A Helicobacter pylori laboratory test (stool antigen or ¹³C-urea breath test) is useful when there is clinical suspicion of active infection – e.g., persistent epigastric pain, dyspepsia, gastritis, or peptic ulcer disease. It is also recommended for confirmation of eradication after antibiotic therapy. Routine screening of asymptomatic individuals is not indicated in low-risk populations, as most infections remain asymptomatic and treatment does not reduce overall mortality. Evidence is based on international guidelines (e.g., Maastricht V/Florence Consensus). Caveats: false negatives can occur if the patient is on proton pump inhibitors or antibiotics. The test detects current infection only; it does not predict future cancer risk. For consumer DNA tests, genetic markers for H. pylori susceptibility are not clinically actionable.
