What role does CYP2D6 play in gut health?

CYP2D6 is a liver enzyme primarily involved in the metabolism of many drugs (e.g., antidepressants, beta-blockers) and endogenous compounds like serotonin. A direct role in gut health is not well established. However, CYP2D6 may indirectly influence the gut via serotonin metabolism: since a large portion of serotonin is produced in the gut, genetic variants could affect local serotonin levels, potentially impacting gut motility or sensitivity. Additionally, drugs metabolized by CYP2D6 can alter the gut microbiome. The evidence is mostly mechanistic and insufficient for clinical recommendations. A DNA test alone cannot assess gut health. For suspected intolerances or dysbiosis, medical evaluation and functional diagnostics (e.g., stool analysis) are more appropriate.
