Can Eisen-Ferritin Selbsttest help with Blutzucker?

An iron-ferritin self-test measures ferritin levels in the blood, which reflect the body's iron stores. Epidemiological evidence links elevated ferritin (iron overload) to insulin resistance and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Iron deficiency can also impair glucose metabolism, for example by reducing insulin secretion. However, ferritin is an acute-phase protein: it rises with inflammation, infection, or liver disease, independent of iron status. A self-test provides only a snapshot and can be misleading without medical interpretation. There are no validated cutoffs for blood sugar management derived from a consumer ferritin test. The evidence for a direct benefit in blood sugar control is weak to moderate – based on observational studies, not randomized interventions. To improve blood sugar, established parameters such as fasting glucose, HbA1c, and possibly an oral glucose tolerance test should be used. A ferritin test may serve as a supplementary clue but does not replace medical diagnostics. Caution against overinterpretation: a single measurement says little about the complex regulation of glucose metabolism.
