What can the Testosteron Test tell you — and what not?

A testosterone test (blood test) measures total and/or free testosterone levels. It can give a rough indication of whether your levels fall within a reference range. What it cannot do: diagnose conditions like hypogonadism or androgen deficiency – that requires multiple morning fasting measurements and clinical evaluation. Testosterone has strong diurnal variation; a single reading is of limited value. Moreover, binding proteins (SHBG) affect the free fraction. Many consumer tests or direct-to-consumer marketers overstate the test's power and suggest unwarranted actions. Without a doctor's interpretation and possibly additional labs (LH, FSH, prolactin, SHBG), the result is just a raw number. Evidence: marketing-heavy, lacking strong clinical validation for lay use. Safety note: If you suspect low testosterone, consult a physician; self-medicating with testosterone is dangerous.
