Is SHBG useful for stress?

SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin) is a carrier protein for testosterone and estradiol. Stress can influence SHBG indirectly via cortisol and insulin – chronic stress often lowers SHBG, increasing free androgen levels. However, SHBG is not a direct or specific stress marker. The MyBody-X Body-Balance Check measures SHBG alongside testosterone, prolactin, and albumin, providing lifestyle suggestions. The evidence for SHBG as a stress indicator is moderate: associations exist but no causal diagnostic utility. For stress assessment, cortisol profiles or validated questionnaires are more appropriate. SHBG can be useful as part of a broader hormonal panel, but not as a standalone stress test.
