ADH1B encodes alcohol dehydrogenase, which metabolizes ethanol to acetaldehyde. Certain variants (e.g., rs1225539, ADH1B*2) result in much faster conversion of alcohol to acetaldehyde, often causing discomfort, facial flushing, and nausea. This can reduce alcohol consumption because unpleasant side effects occur earlier. Lower alcohol intake in turn reduces calorie consumption and may indirectly support weight loss.
