In healthy individuals, this mechanism keeps blood glucose within a narrow range. In type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance develops: cells respond less to insulin, so the pancreas must produce more insulin to maintain normal glucose levels. Over time, insulin production may decline, leading to persistently high blood glucose. Genetic factors, such as variants in the TCF7L2 gene, can modestly increase the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, but the effect size is small and strongly overshadowed by lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, weight).
