How are FUT2 and Haut related?

FUT2 (fucosyltransferase 2) is known as the 'secretor gene' and influences the fucosylation of glycans on mucosal surfaces and skin. These glycans act as attachment sites for bacteria, thereby modulating the skin microbiome composition. Some studies suggest a link between certain FUT2 variants (e.g., non-secretor status) and an increased risk of atopic dermatitis or dry skin, likely through altered microbial colonization. However, the evidence is largely mechanistic, coming from cell or animal models; large-scale human clinical studies are lacking. MyBody-X tests may include FUT2 variants, but the clinical utility for skin health is currently limited. Results should not be used for medical diagnosis or treatment decisions. A dermatologist can better assess individual risk. Overall, there is a plausible biological pathway, but direct applicability to skincare or prevention is not yet well established.
