How are Homocystein and allergy related?

Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing amino acid produced during methionine metabolism. Elevated homocysteine levels are linked to oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction – factors that can also influence allergic responses. There is evidence that homocysteine modulates immune cell function (e.g., T cells, mast cells) and may promote histamine release. However, direct evidence for a causal relationship between homocysteine and allergies is weak. Most studies are mechanistic or epidemiological, without clear clinical recommendations. Some research suggests associations with asthma or atopic dermatitis, but results are inconsistent. Folate, vitamin B12, and B6 can lower homocysteine, but whether this alleviates allergic symptoms is unproven. In MyBody-X tests, homocysteine is usually measured in blood; genetic tests for MTHFR variants indicate predisposition but are not diagnostic. Caution: lowering homocysteine without medical supervision is not advised.
