How are APOE and skin aging related?

The relationship between APOE and skin aging is not yet clearly established in science. APOE is primarily known for its role in lipid metabolism and neurodegenerative diseases. Some evidence suggests that APOE variants (especially ε4) might influence skin aging through inflammatory processes and oxidative stress – for example, by altering lipid homeostasis in the skin or modulating collagen synthesis. However, these links are mostly based on mechanistic studies or small observations; large, replicated human studies are lacking. The effect size is likely small and overshadowed by environmental factors such as UV exposure, diet, and lifestyle. MyBody-X tests that include APOE are intended for lifestyle optimization, not medical prediction. Relying solely on genetic risk for skin aging is therefore not advisable. Note: APOE testing can have psychological implications (e.g., Alzheimer's risk); genetic counseling is recommended.
