What to watch with SHBG and Blutzucker?

SHBG (sex hormone-binding globulin) and blood sugar are linked through insulin metabolism. Low SHBG levels are consistently associated with insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and increased risk of type 2 diabetes in observational studies. SHBG is produced in the liver, and its levels are regulated by insulin, thyroid hormones, and estrogens. A low SHBG can be an early indicator of impaired glucose tolerance, even before fasting glucose becomes abnormal. However, SHBG is not a standard diabetes marker – diagnosis relies on HbA1c, fasting glucose, and oral glucose tolerance tests. Additionally, obesity, liver disease, and medications (e.g., glucocorticoids, oral contraceptives) affect SHBG. An isolated low SHBG without elevated blood sugar is not alarming but warrants lifestyle review (diet, exercise, weight). If both low SHBG and high blood sugar are present, medical evaluation is needed. Consumer tests provide a snapshot, not a diagnosis.
