Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that colonizes the human stomach and has been linked both to gastric inflammation, ulcers, and cancer, and to potential beneficial effects on longevity. Some epidemiological studies suggest that H. pylori prevalence declines in very old individuals, hinting at a possible protective role – for example, through immune modulation or microbiome interactions. Other research indicates that persistent infection with certain strains (e.g., cagA-positive) increases gastric cancer risk, while eradication may reduce esophageal cancer risk. The evidence is mixed: no clear causal relationship between H. pylori and extended lifespan exists. Host genetics, diet, and environment are major confounders. From a precision medicine standpoint, routine screening for H. pylori in asymptomatic individuals is not recommended.
