Can HDL help with skin aging?

HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is often called 'good' cholesterol and has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Theoretically, it could influence skin aging by reducing oxidative stress and protecting collagen synthesis. Some observational studies suggest a link between higher HDL levels and better skin elasticity, but the overall evidence is weak. Most data come from epidemiological studies that do not prove causation. Moreover, HDL levels are strongly influenced by lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and smoking, complicating interpretation. There are no clinical trials demonstrating a direct anti-aging effect of HDL on skin. Therefore, deliberately raising HDL to prevent skin aging is not evidence-based. A healthy lifestyle with balanced nutrition, sun protection, and smoking cessation remains the most important approach for skin health.
