How are Östradiol and allergy related?

Estradiol, the primary form of estrogen, modulates the immune system in complex ways. It can influence mast cells, eosinophils, and T-helper cells, potentially shifting the balance toward a Th2-type response that promotes IgE production and allergic inflammation. However, clinical evidence is mixed: some studies link higher estradiol levels (e.g., during pregnancy or hormone therapy) with increased asthma or allergic rhinitis, while others show no association or even a protective effect. Most data come from observational and mechanistic studies; robust randomized trials are lacking. Therefore, a clear causal relationship between estradiol and allergy cannot be established. Individual factors such as genetics, microbiome, and environment likely dominate. For consumers, measuring estradiol alone is not useful for allergy risk assessment.
