How are APOE and stress related?

The relationship between APOE and stress is complex and still under investigation. APOE (Apolipoprotein E) is primarily known for its role in lipid metabolism and as a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. The ε4 variant has been linked in some studies to increased stress susceptibility, possibly through dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and altered cortisol levels. Carriers of the ε4 allele may exhibit a heightened cortisol response to psychological stress. However, the effects are small and the evidence is mixed – many studies are mechanistic or observational. A genetic test like MyBody-X can determine APOE genotype, but results should not be used as the sole basis for stress management. Lifestyle, sleep, diet, and psychosocial factors have a far greater impact on stress experience. Clinical relevance is currently limited; there are no specific recommendations for APOEε4 carriers regarding stress reduction beyond general healthy practices.
